Indulging in delicious foods has become a part of the Holiday season. Unfortunately, over indulgence is too easy and can result in lower energy levels and a larger waist line before the new year is even upon us. From holiday parties to treats at the office to family dinner on the holiday itself, tempting eats are everywhere.
Luckily, Heather Christo, Chef & Entertaining expert shares her favorite healthy (and delicious!) holiday recipes with ABC News on Healthy Living. This year, whether you are the host or simply a guest, one of these delightful recipes can be a saving grace and pass to wellness in this season of over-indulgence.

Massage can be beneficial to relax the body, mind, and soul. It can ease tension in your muscles and provide rejuvenation in your day. In turn, massage is increasing the levels of dopamine (a neurotransmitter that helps control the brain’s reward and pleasure centers) as well as the values of seratonin (a neurotransmitter popularly thought to contribute to feelings of well being and happiness).
Amazingly, this has been proven in two studies of extreme situations. In one study, conducted by the Touch Research Institute at the University of Miami, 34 women with Stage 1/2 breast cancer were divided into two groups. One group received 30 minutes of massage, three times a week an a control group that received no massage. In the long term, the massage group showed increased urinary dopamine levels, seratonin values, Natural Killer cells, and lymphocytes. All of the above which help to increase immunity and wellness, an amazing and incredible factor in the body of someone attempting to battle off breast cancer. See the full research here.
In another amazing study, by the same institute, 24 HIV-positive adolescents were randomly divided into two groups. One group received massage and other progressive muscle relaxation two times a week for 3 month, the others did not. The results illustrated an increase in Natural Killer cells and improved HIV disease progression markers. In essence, massage therapy and muscle relaxation increased the immunity in an immune disease patient, even to the point of slowing the progression of their disease, an incredible discovery. We all know lack of exercise can contribute to health problems. But even with exercise, sitting for too long can significantly impact your health. In fact sitting 6+ hours a day increases your risk of death by 40%. That is, individuals that sit over 6 hours a day are 40% more likely to die in the next 15 years than those who sit less than 3. Unfortunately, 6 hours a day is nothing for most of us. Driving, sitting at work on a computer, watching TV; the hours can pile up fast.
According to one study published in the European Heart Journal, “research found that long periods of sitting down, even in people who did a lot of exercise otherwise, were associated with worse indicators of cardio-metabolic function and inflammation, such as larger waist circumferences, lower levels of good cholesterol, and ..triglycerides (blood fats).”
However, there is hope. The study also found that individual that took several breaks throughout their work day or frequently broke up periods of sitting, their waists were smaller and their bodies were healthier.
Take the time to care for your body. Seek out other ways to make your commute active, take breaks at work, stretch, walk around, turn off the TV.

Mindful eating is a new approach to how we enjoy our food and nurture our bodies. There are no rules, food you can eat or food you can’t eat. The purpose of mindful eating is to savor your food, enjoy it without distraction, and eat slowly. This in turn creates an inner awareness of when you are satisfied, when you are truly hungry, and foods make your body feel happy and nurtured.
