Healthy Aging, Part 1: Fitness by Andrew Weil, MD

As many of you know, I (Dr. Moyer) follow many of Dr. Weil’s protocols, not only for myself, but for my patients.  Dr. Weil has a series of “Healthy Aging” articles that I am going to summarize on the blog this week.

From Dr Weil…

“The aging process is a natural part of life, and growing old is not something to deny, avoid or fear. However, taking some simple measures now – no matter what your age – can help to make the physical and mental changes that accompany aging easier to handle. Regular exercise is an important step in the right direction, one that can help lessen the risk of disease, promote sleep, increase energy and ward off a host of health issues. Along with a sound diet, activities that stimulate your mind and social connections, exercise completes an optimum approach to aging well. Make sure that whatever type of exercise (or exercises) you decide to engage in, your body receives a workout for the heart, as well as for bones and muscles. Walking, strength training, yoga and tai chi are some good choices; talk with your physician about options that are best for you.”

One of the quotes we use at MTW in our seminars is, “besides quitting smoking, becoming physically fit is the most important thing a person can do for their health.”  Basically, the body was built to me in motion, and when its not, it breaks down.  Its as simple as that.

Any exercise is a step in the right direction, but strength training gives a person the most bang for their buck.  If you only had 1-hr per week to devote to exercise, we recommend two days of strength training.  If you have more time, in between those days, consider some form of cardio like running, bicycling, or swimming.  Yoga and thai chi are also very exercises.

When it comes to becoming physically fit, their are 4 areas that a person must consider: strength, cardiovascular, flexibility, and agility (balance).  A good workout in the gym should cover all four of those.

If you are not sure where to begin, we recommend working with a personal trainer.  Jeff, our on-site trainer is offering a special during the month of February – the first workout is FREE!  You can’t beat that.  Call (303) 756-9355 to schedule an appt today.
