What is GuaSha?
GuaSha is a manual technique in which a smooth edged tool is used to “scrape” different body regions. It is most often used for musculoskeletal pain and dysfunction involving muscle tightness. While the technique can sound unfamiliar and look a little funny, most of my patients enjoy the way it feels and get a lot of relief from their pain using this Traditional Chinese Medicine technique.
Using this scraping method, we are able to remove adhesions, or “sticky spots”, in tissue, relax muscles, increase blood flow, reduce inflammation, and improve flexibility. The ancient technique of GuaSha can be compared to the modern practice of Graston technique, practiced commonly by Chiropractors and Physical Therapists.
Does it Hurt?
Most people really enjoy GuaSha. It is not meant to be painful but it can sometimes be a little uncomfortable, especially depending on what muscles are being targeted. You will sometimes have a red mark left on your skin after treatment, this is totally normal after a GuaSha session and nothing to be concerned about.
