Swedish Massage, often referred to as a relaxation massage, is one of the more commonly known bodywork modalities. Its main components are a combination of long smooth strokes (effleurage) and kneading (petrissage) on the superficial layers of muscular tissue. Sometimes, in addition to the gentler techniques, a therapist will incorporate more fast-paced movements such as percussion (tapotement) and cross fiber friction. Each unique component, as well as the combinations of them, promotes bodily healing and enhances the sense of wellbeing.
- Relieves muscular pain
- Reduces emotional stress
- Detoxifies the body
- Strengthens immunity
- Improves circulation
- Increases flexibility
- Speeds up recovery from injury
- Promotes restful sleep
The more vigorous techniques provide additional benefits. Tapotement promotes the expulsion of phlegm by loosening the mucus in the lungs. Cross fiber friction warms the muscles and breaks up adhesions (knots).
While Swedish Massage is safe for most patients, avoid massage if you are experiencing any of the following:
- Open wounds
- Contagious illnesses
Consult your doctor pre-massage if you have any of the following:
- Broken bones or fractures
- Severe muscle strains
- Swollen areas on body
- Varicose veins
- Recent surgery
- Use of blood thinners
